rogue Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Hi, I am new to the forum so please bear with me!!! I have a 2005 1.9 TDI auto galaxy (110, I think) with power steering problem. There is a shuddering and screeching sound when the car is stationary and manoeuvring the wheel in either direction and heavy, the shuddering and screeching is also present when manoeuvring slowly around corners. The engine also sounds louder with a squeak every so often when the handbrake is on and the car is in the drive position. We have had the struts, bushes and power steering pump replaced, power steering fluid was also checked / replaced, this improved the drive of the car slightly however the problem still persists and is rapidly getting worse. We have not had any warnings from the system on the dash that the car is showing a fault. Our mechanic who we have used for sometime on our other (older) car with no problems has not left me feeling very confident as he sought the advice of another mechanic to verify the problem (replacement of pump), this was however after the car had had the bushes and struts replaced as he advised this was the problem causing the noise the first time round. We didn't think anything of our mechanic seeking a second opinion as we presumed he was just being thorough, this being the second time the car having to go into the garage for the same problem, however after the replacement we were advised that if the pump did not fix the problem then we would require a new steering column, which would be very expensive !!!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Quote

chrispb123456 Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Hi there Sounds like the very popular alternator pulley problem, this usually starts giving problems around 85000 to 95000 mls.The pulley has a built in clutch which allows the pulley to freewheel in one direction, they can either seize up or as in my case freewheel in both directions, this action usually brings on the "Alternator Workshop Light" momentarily on the dash.Your mechanic shouldn't have a problem getting alternator off but if he's going to attempt taking pulley off it requires a special tool, I had mine replaced at the alternator repair shop who supplied part Quote
rogue Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Hi gregers, (1.9 TDI AUTO 2005, 64k on the clock) Many thanks for the post, I have been out to look at the car this morning and nor myself or my husband are mechanics and haven't a clue where to look for the alternator or what it looks like, however on closer inspection with the engine running and turning the steering wheel we can visably see what the link was talking i.e. belts. I have taken down the alternator no. and will be doing a little digging for part numbers to hand over to our mechanic with a print out of this forum. Thanks to everyone for their comments, they truly help when you fear your looking at thousands to fix your car and discover common problems that can be rectify for a couple of hundred I guess we have already paid to have the most expensive part fixed (that prob didn't need done in the first place) and just the minor issues left now. Will keep you posted of outcome. Thanks again Rogue Quote
gregers Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 in that link i gave you towards the end somewhere is my post on the subject and where you can obtain the parts.and if you read up on it from the beginning within that thread are other links which give you pictures of what you are looking for. Jayton Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 What was the part number for the alternator? I've got to install EKTA again as vagcat is no longer working, so could look up the pulley part number (there were 3 alternators, and thus 3 pulleys), the pulleys are about Quote
rogue Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Hi Jayton, That would be great thanks, this is the first opportunity I have had to get back on the computer today, was just about to start searching too, the pleasure of having three small children. The alternator is a bosch 120 amp number 028903028E. If possible can you confirm that the 2005 model requires the special tool in order to remove the pulley? I think the code for it was 3707 if I have remembered correctly from the comments previous members have left. (hope this makes sense to you) Unfortunately neither my hubby or I would have the first clue on removing / replacing parts, even with a comprehensive guide we probably still wouldn't be confident enough to try, we would be worried we did the car more damage LOL, we really are dumb when it comes to car mechanics. Thanks again for your help it's greatly appreciated. Rogue Quote
rogue Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Hi chrispb123456 Thanks very much for the info, it's greatly appreciated. I've not had any warning lights showing at all even momentarily on the dash, so a bit concerned. Do you know if the 2005 model has this warning light ? I feel the best way forward is to replace the pulley and both the drive belt and auto belt tensioner, after reading all the comments left by other members. We have had the problem with the car since the end of January and had the new power steering pump fitted at the end of March, so now concerned about the damage we could be doing to the new pump. Only wish I had found this forum sooner. I will be sure to add my car details to the sig strip, as soon as I can navigate my way around LOL, I had to contact a member by PM just to ask how to post, did not see the button at the bottom of the page until pointed out to me. Thanks again Rogue Quote

Thanks again RogueHi there Rogue If you have the trip computer look in the car's handbook page 64-67 you will find a list of possible warning messages, if the warning message "Alternator Workshop" were to appear it would be accompanied breifly with the red battery/ignition warning light. If you click on "MY Controls" you will find the menu's for personalising your postings :) ps check for your engine code there's a sticker on the timing belt cover or look on your registration document it will be 3 letters, ANU. AUY. ASZ. Edited May 17, 2010 by chrispb123456 Quote
Jayton Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 I know how it feels with 3 kids, fortunately I can leave them inside with the wifey while I go outside to look at the car :) Oh, I also got my car in January and it's been doing this since, in the last 2 weeks it's got a lot worse so I had to do it. BTW, 2 years ago I couldn't even drive - let alone work on one, but I've refused to pay garage rate @ Quote
rogue Posted May 19, 2010 Author Report Posted May 19, 2010 Hi guys, I was wondering if you could help me again please. Went to local (frauds dealership) today, I asked for quotes for a belt tensioner, auto drive belt and pulley for the alternator, sale person advised that the pulley couldn't be purchased separately !!!!! I was waiting for that answer, (thanks to greger for posting the link and having read it all), I advised the sales person that I was aware of people who had purchased it separately for a 2003 model. The sales person was honest enough to show me his screen, on what could and could not be purchased advised that you could purchase the pulley separate for 2003 year model but the 2005 is a newer model and only comes as one unit. So my question is, is anyone aware if you can buy the pulley separate for a 2005 model as all comments I have read have been placed by owners of slightly older models. For everyone Quote
Jayton Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Sorry I still haven't installed EKTA, so can't do the parts numbers comparisons yet. http://www.vwsonline.co.uk/car_parts_bristol/ Have a browse on their site, I'm sure I found the pulley cheaper with them than VW, I paid Quote
gregers Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 the only thing i bought from the dealer was the tensioner, iirc about 50 quid, the pulley and belt was from gsf.sure i put the info within the link. Quote
